Flower of Immortality

This pair of pendant earrings is designed in a simple non-distracting motif and with an unusual combination of gems in a non-overbearing setting which lets the gemstones do all the talking. Each earring recalls a floral applique with a colorful arrangement of green malachite that takes center stage, flawless turquoise cabochons, and tanzanites, all enhanced with white diamonds and crowned with an impeccable natural Bahraini pearl.

Design by Sumaya Aljazeeri; Jewels made by: Christophi Jewelry Bahrain; 18k white gold, diamonds, natural turquoise, tanzanite and malachite, natural Bahraini pearls

These bespoke earrings shine a contemporary light on the history of a place, once referred to as the Garden of the gods, a paradise full of jewel laden trees, a place by the sea, once called Dilmun, now called Bahrain, my home country. In reference and alluding to the flower of immortality in the Epic of Gilgamesh which dates back some 4,500 years, the flower which Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk, was told holds the secret of eternal life, that he found in the deep ends of this island’s waters. It is thought to be none other than the oysters holding the Bahraini pearls. This piece resembles history, geography and eternity in my love for art and jewelry.
